Reviving Analog Photography: Savannah Center for Photography's Grand Opening (2026)

The Savannah Center for Photography is a new nonprofit organization that aims to bring back the art of darkroom photography to the city of Savannah. Founded by Josh Yates, a photographer with a budding national career, the center opens its doors this month in the heart of the Thomas Square Streetcar Historic District. Yates, who is also the board president and founder, has assembled a stellar board of directors with experience in fine art, photography, academia, business, and arts administration. The center's goal is to foster appreciation for photography, provide resources and education, and offer a community darkroom, workshop space, and rotating gallery exhibitions. Yates' passion for photography was sparked at a young age, and he has since developed a strong interest in the physics and science behind the craft. The center's inaugural show, SCP Presents, features works by board members, photographer friends, and acquaintances, with all proceeds donated to the new venture. Yates' own photography career has been impressive, with his work included in group shows and exhibitions across the country. His chosen subject matter is abandoned spaces, often shot in black and white, and his three main bodies of work explore the beauty of dystopian interiors and landscapes. The Savannah Center for Photography is a welcome addition to the city's art scene, offering a community darkroom, gallery, and workshop space, with plans for a larger digital lab and more scanners and printers. The center's grand opening and show, SCP Presents, will take place on June 26th, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., at 2205 Price Street.
